The 8th National Injury Prevention and Control Conference was held at the University of New South Wales, Sydney in September 2006.

The theme for the conference was “Working Together”, and with over 200 delegates attending the conference, the emphasis on the increasing need for researchers and injury prevention practitioners to embrace a broad multidisciplinary approach was well received.

At each conference, the AIPN presents up to three awards to those members who contribute in a significant way to injury prevention and control.

There are three award categories to acknowledge the diversity of members' contributions:

• Research;
• Practice;
• Policy.

In addition, there is usually a Special Award for sustained achievement over a professional career to recognise important contributions at State, national and international levels. Selection criteria for all categories include excellence in communication skills, collaborative work, mentoring of junior colleagues, originality of contribution and overall contribution to injury prevention.

The awards for 2006 (Sydney) went to:

• Jan Shield

• Erin Cassell

• Kathleen Clapham

• Joan Ozanne-Smith

Previous awards:

• The first awards were made in Sydney in 1997. Winners included Henk Harberts and Rebecca Peters.
• In 1998, in Melbourne, the winners included Joan Ozanne-Smith, Terry Hunter, Lynne Galanti and Moya White (joint).
• In 1999, in Brisbane, a single award was made to Mary Sexton.
• In 2000, in Canberra, the winners were Jerry Moller, Caroline Finch, Mark Hennessy and Pam Albany.
• In 2001, in Warrnambool, the winners were Sharon Landers (for Practice) and Mark Stevenson (for Research), Victorian State Coroner Graeme Johnstone (for Sustained Achievement).
• In 2003, in Perth, the winners were Dale Hanson (for Practice), Lesley Day (for Research), and James Harrison (for Sustained Achievement).
• In 2004, in Mackay, an award went to Kathryn McFarlane (for Practice).
